Energy and Weight Loss Supplements: Energy Drinks

Posted December 24th, 2005 by admin

Learn the pros and cons of energy drinks.

Sports drinks (Gatorade) are for replenishing an athlete’s electrolytes. Water alone cannot provide these nutrients. Sports drinks provide hydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue. This can help to increase an athlete’s energy.

There are many energy drinks on the market that advertise a herbal energizer. However, not always do they use enough of the herb to create a noticeable effect. If too much of the herb is used this can be harmful and cause adverse reactions with other medications.

Another downfall to certain energy drinks is that they rely heavily on caffeine as a stimulant. The sugar content of these drinks is extremely high also. While you may feel a boost in energy, eventually you will have a sharp decrease in sugar levels in the blood. The drop in blood sugar level will lead to a feeling of tiredness. This can create a cycle of dependency.

Children should not drink energy drinks because caffeine is a drug. A legal drug, but it does have an addictive quality. So limit your intake of caffeine and do not let children drink caffeinated energy drinks. They do not understand the health risks associated with caffeine.
