There are three traditional methods of using essential oils for aromatherapy termed French, English, and German models. The English model refers to aromatherapy massage. This involves the dilution of essential oils in carrier oils for application topically to the skin. Both essential and carrier oils are easily absorbed into the skin and subsequently into the bloodstream for a physiological effect.
Dilute most essential oils to less than 3% of the total volume as they can cause skin irritation. Chamomile and lavender essential oil can be applied (neat) without dilution. Cinnamon oil and Oregano oil must be highly diluted to be applied to the bottom of the feet. However, test a very small amount first.
Essential oils pass through the skin fairly readily when applied topically. Essential oils are lipotropic or fat soluble. This means that their effect on the body can be targeted. For example, for digestive difficulty or trouble rub Peppermint oil diluted in carrier oil onto the abdomen. You can also rub Chamomile oil or Lavender oil onto the solar plexus on the bottom tip of the sternum to help relieve tension.
The French model consists of ingestion and topical application of undiluted essential oils. Many individuals apply Frankincense, Myrhh, and Sandalwood essential oils to the temples for meditation enhancement. However, always begin slowly with the application of essential oils onto the skin. You do not know how the body will react to a new substance so do a patch test first.
The German model consists of inhalation of the essential oils that can directly affect the limbic system. The essential oil can be diffused in a cold-air diffuser, warmer or oil lamp. These tools are used to disperse tiny droplets of essential oils into the air. Oils high in sesquiterpines such as sandalwood, vetiver, myrrh, and frankincense have been known to increase activity and oxygenation to certain areas of the brain. Begin slowly with inhalation also since essential oils are effective in low doses.
You notice a distaste for the smell or a mild headache coming on if the concentration of the oil has gotten too high. Inhalation is more effective for mood altering effects of the oils. Rosemary oil is good for mental stimulation while Lavender is good for relaxation.
