Signs of insomnia may include difficult falling or staying asleep, wakefulness, restless sleep, wake too early, or not feeling refreshed in the morning. Those with insomnia have difficulty functioning during the day. Insomnia side effects include fatigue, sleepiness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and decreased energy. Achieving a quality sleep is more important than the number of hours one sleeps. Poor quality sleep can easily make an individual irritable and tired.
Insomnia may be a symptom of an external factor such as stress. If you can identify the root cause of your insomnia, then you can develop an effective treatment option. Treatments for insomnia may include changing one’s bedroom to be conducive to sleep or using prescribed medications. However, sleep medications should only be prescribed for a short period of time because of the increased risk of dependency. How can you ensure a better night’s rest?
Try to maintain a regular bedtime and awakening time every day. The body develops a sleep schedule which can easily be disrupted by changing the times you rest and wake. The bedroom should only be used for sleep and sexual intimacy. Engaging in other activities in the bedroom causes you to think about these activities while in bed instead of sleeping. Do not go to bed hungry or after a large meal. Stimulants (exercise, caffeine) should not be ingested for 4-6 hours before bed. Energy and weight loss supplements encourage insomnia sufferers to work towards a better nights rest.
