What diet is right for you? The New Year is here, so which diet holds the key to helping you lose the most weight? There a numerous diets available and new diets seem to spring up every few months. This creates a new diet rage. Can the popular fad diets help you lose weight or are other diets more effective with weight loss?

A recent study allowed 160 participants to choose their own diet plan to follow for an extended period of time. The purpose of the study was to see which diet plan would be successful. The study proved which diet programs tend to be successful in relation to total weight loss but also which programs individuals were likely to stick with for healthy weight maintenance.

The most common diet plans were the Zone, Atkins, Weight Watchers, and Ornish. The study also showed that those participants that picked diet plans that focused on low carbs and high fat quit their diet (Atkins). Those participants that followed low fat and high carb vegetarian foods also quit their diet (Ornish). Two-thirds of the Weight Watcher participants stuck with the diet plan along with the Zone diet participants.

Surprisingly all diets performed the same. Ornish participants followed the diet for one year and had a weight loss rate of 6%. Atkins participants had a weight loss rate of about 4%. Weight Watchers and Zone diet participants had a 5% weight loss rate. Researchers concluded that no one diet is magic but a healthy eating plan along with an exercise regimen is the key to weight loss.
