Energy and Weight Loss Supplements: Xenical or Orlistat?

Posted January 29th, 2006 by admin

Learn more about today’s energy and weight loss supplements topic; is the new weight loss supplement by GlaxoSmithKline worth it?

The FDA is currently approving the release of a new weight loss supplement. This weight loss supplement can be available for over the counter purchase instead of by prescription. Federal health advisors have already given the go ahead for release. This new weight loss supplement is created by GlaxoSmithKline. They are hoping to release this weight loss supplement by the end of this year.

Is this product worth mentioning? Consumers of course, do have a right to know. This medication is called Orlistat (over the counter name) or Xenical (prescription name). This pill sounds like a “magic pill.” However, every medication whether over the counter or prescription does hold certain risks. There is no cure all for weight loss. Weight loss supplements can help you lose weight but if you do not change your diet and lifestyle to a healthier one then weight loss will be temporary and short lived. Orlistat did indeed help obese people lose weight in the clinical trials. This medication can be expected to cost around $12-$25 per week, if sold over the counter.

Possible side effects of orlistat include gas, incontinence, oily spotting, and loose and oily stools. The FDA is concerned with interactions with diabetics, bulimics, organ transplants, and other prescription medications. Many watchdog groups claim this is a desperate attempt to revive the barely effective drug. GlaxoSmithKline also recommends taking this medication for six months before stopping. This can add up to around $288-$600 in 6 months. I am not against this medication but I am not strictly for it. Relying on medications to take our problems away is not the answer. Spend your money trying to learn how to be healthy for a long and prosperous life.
