Liquid Vitamin Facts: Body Fat or Water?
Learn more about today’s liquid vitamin facts topic; are you losing body fat or water?
When weighing yourself daily during a new exercise plan, you may notice that you gain anywhere between 1-4 pounds. Weighing ourselves can become an anxiety filled event that leaves us wondering where did we go wrong. What makes our weight fluctuate?
Sometimes we feel that weight loss success is measured by a scale. Wrong! The scale is actually measuring every part of our physical being at that moment in time. What does this mean? This means that the scale is measuring fat, muscles, organs, tissues, and water weight. Although organs and tissues do not change much; fat, muscles, and water do change. This is why the numbers on the scale fluctuate.
Water weight can affect your total weight up to ten pounds or even more during certain times. What kind of dietary factors affect your water weight? High protein and low carbohydrate diets cause a dramatic shift in water weight. When you cut back on carb intake, the body starts to break down glycogen. Glycogen is the body’s carbohydrate stores. The breakdown of glycogen causes the body to excrete large amounts of water. Once the body begins to use the glycogen for energy, weight loss slows down. Extreme high protein, low carb diets can lead to dehydration because of the water loss.
When a low carb dieter eats a carbohydrate rich meal, the body is replenishing the lost fluid. This can easily lead to a 1-3 pound weight gain. This weight gain leads to many dieter frustrations. Excess carbohydrates can strongly stimulate insulin production, which promotes fat deposition and increases appetite. This type of weight gain happens gradually and not overnight.
