Learn why calcium is an essential mineral.

Calcium is an essential mineral. Many do not realize that close to three pounds of your body weight is calcium. Most know that calcium is used for strong bones and teeth, in which 99% of three pounds is found. This mineral helps to build the rigid structure of our skeleton. Calcium also helps nerves and muscles to function properly.

As we age, our body’s ability to absorb calcium declines which can lead to osteoporosis. This is an important reason to take a calcium supplement. Children also need to have a good source of calcium so they can grow big and strong. Some signs of deficiency include muscle cramps, tremors, osteoarthritis, tooth decay, insomnia, joint pain, and nervousness. Good sources of calcium can be found in cheese (Swiss and cheddar), almonds, prunes, pumpkin seeds, winter wheat, and cabbage.
