Not too many know of elderberry extract. This is an extract that comes from the elderberry tree that grows wild in Europe. This extract has a history of medicinal purposes. This extract is used as a home remedy for viral infections. Elderberry extract does not prevent infection but will limit the duration of a viral infection.

Elderberry extract contains vitamin C. Elderberry extract has a laxative and diuretic effect. The roots, bark leaves, and berries of the elderberry tree all have active properties. However, the berries must ripen before being picked. Unripe berries contain alkaloids and cyanogenic glycosides that can be poisonous.

The poisonous alkaloids are bitter in taste. The cyanogenic glycosides can bring tears to an adult’s eyes. Years ago elderberry extract was added to port and red wine to enhance the wines color. Later, physicians in Prague realized that the juice contained an anti-neuralgic property. Elderberry juice also can be used for the treatment of sciatica and neuralgia. The physicians recommended taking 30 grams of elderberry extract and 10 mg of port for the treatment of neuralgia and sciatica.
