A healthy weight gain will vary for each individual. This weight gain is based on your weight at the start of the pregnancy. If you are underweight, meaning that you have a body mass index of less than 18.5; healthy weight gain should be between 25-40 pounds. The overweight individual will usually be directed to gain no more than 15-25 pounds. However, most pregnancies should gain around 15-40 pounds. Anything that is greater than this amount may not be considered healthy for mom or baby.
During pregnancy the body requires a daily increase of about 300 calories. Pregnancy requires a balanced diet for optimal growth of your baby.
