How does the essential mineral magnesium benefit the body? Read more to find out.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that most do not talk about. However, this mineral does have many health benefits associated with it. Magnesium helps to strengthen our bones and teeth. Magnesium helps promote healthy muscles by helping the muscles to relax. Magnesium is also a cofactor for many essential enzymes in our body.

Some signs of deficiency are muscle tremors, muscle weakness, insomnia, nervousness, high blood pressure, constipation, irregular heartbeat, convulsions, depression, confusion, hyperactivity, and decreased appetite. Good food sources include almonds, cashews, peanuts, Brazil nuts, green peas, potato skins, crab, pecans, garlic, and raisins. Large amounts of calcium in milk products can decrease the absorption of this mineral.
