Liquid Vitamin Facts: Mangosteen?

Learn more about this rare fruit.

Do you know what a mangosteen is? I didn’t until recently. A mangosteen is an edible fruit that many do not know. Do not confuse it with a mango. They are not the same thing.

The mangosteen fruit grows only in Southeast Asia. This fruit is small, about the size of a tangerine. The fruit is a dark red/purple color on the outside. On the inside, the fruit is pure white and said to be very sweet. However, the fruit perishes easily and will not continue to ripen after being picked.

This fruit is not available to much of the world since it does perish easily. This is why many do not know of this fruit. In Southeast Asia, the mangosteen is widely available and called the “Queen of Fruits.” Because of limited supply, the fruit is also very expensive.

This fruit has generated a lot of interest in the western parts of the world. Why? The rind holds many useful medicinal purposes. Also, the mangosteen contains an anti-oxidant (xanthones). Mangosteen is becoming more popular for enhancing health and overall well-being.
