A nutritional supplement is a very broad term used to describe a product that may enhance your health and improve athletic performance. A nutritional supplement may also be a product that is designed to affect your physical or mental well being. A nutritional supplement may include weight loss products, herbs, vitamins, sports supplements, antioxidants, and teas.

Nutritional supplements have been used throughout history to improve one’s health and treat a wide array of ailments. One of the most common forms of nutritional supplements is the vitamin. Many medical professionals recommend the use of vitamin supplements. You should try to take a multivitamin that has the appropriate dose of the daily recommended allowance of each vitamin. Do not take the fat soluble vitamins in excess because they are not readily excreted by the body. This is one reason why taking a multivitamin that contains the appropriate amount of each vitamin is suffice.

Sports supplements used to enhance performance and speed recovery are very popular such as creatine. Ephedrine is a controversial weight loss supplement that was banned from over the counter sale. However, ephedrine is available once again but in much smaller doses. This weight loss supplement should be taken with extreme caution because of serious side effects.

Nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA so please use these products with caution. Every product that is not regulated by the FDA should contain this statement, “these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.” When purchasing a nutritional supplement, choose a reputable retailer. Your shopping should be careful with a little bit of research. Be leery of product pitches that claim “miracles” that are just too ‘good’ to be true because too often they are too ‘good’ to be true.
