Liquid Vitamin Facts: Omega-6 Fats

Posted January 11th, 2006 by admin

Learn more about today’s liquid vitamin facts topic; how do omega-6 fats affect your health.

The omega-6 fatty acid is a type of polyunsaturated fat. This fatty acid is primarily linoleic acid obtained from vegetable oils. The omega-3 and omega-6 fats are considered essential fatty acids. These fatty acids help to prevent heart disease. A diet high in these fats is conducive to good health. Good food sources of the omega-6 fats are nuts, olives, soybeans, avocados. Omega-6 fats can be found in sesame, cottonseed, and corn oil.

Trans fats are another type of fat that is chemically an unsaturated fat. This type of fat behaves much like a saturated fat. This is really bad for the body. Trans fats increase serum LDL’s or low density lipoproteins but not HDL’s (high density lipoproteins). The shift in LDL levels causes an increased risk of heart disease. Trans fats are produced during the hydrogenation of polyunsaturated oils. Trans fats are found in most margarine and baked goods. You should try to avoid trans fats at all costs for good health.
