Learn more about the mineral selenium.

Selenium is one of the essential minerals our body requires for health. However, most do not talk about this mineral over meals. This mineral does bring some benefits to the table of health.

Selenium offers anti-oxidant properties that help to protect the body from free radicals and carcinogens. Selenium helps to reduce inflammation in the body. Also, selenium stimulates the immune system to fight infections. Selenium helps vitamin E function in the body. Selenium is necessary for metabolism and for a healthy heart. Selenium is also required for a functional male reproductive system.

Signs of deficiency include a family history of cancer, premature aging, cataracts, high blood pressure, and frequent infections. Good food sources of selenium include tuna, oysters, molasses, mushrooms, cottage cheese, herring, cabbage, zucchini, cod, and chicken. However, selenium is robbed from refined foods and by modern farming techniques.
