Smoking and pregnancy just do not make for a healthy mom or baby. You should want only the best of health for your child. Smoking can affect an unborn child in many ways.

A woman who smokes while pregnant takes a big risk with her child’s health. The chance of losing her baby during pregnancy is greater. Smoking increases the risk of having a prematurely born child. These premature children have difficulty breathing because the lungs have not fully developed also putting them at risk for many illnesses. Studies show that possibility of infant morality is 50% higher when the mother smokes than in case of non -smoking mothers.

Babies born to smoking mothers usually have a low birth weight. Although this may seem like a good thing, it is not. Low birth weight babies are just as difficult to deliver as normal birth weight babies. Also, these children usually need special care in the hospital because of the low birth weight and their tendency to be ill. These babies may die during birth or within their first year. Smoking increases the chance of stillbirths, miscarriages, and ectopic pregnancy. Smoking also increases the risk of developing complications during the delivery. Smoking while pregnant also increases the risk of your child developing sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or crib death.

It is never too late to quit smoking. But if you quit sooner than later you are rendering a new healthy life to your child and yourself. Most smokers find it difficult to quit smoking. There are many support centers that can help you along with help from your health care provider. One step to quitting will lead your unborn on the path of a safe childhood.
