Foods that contain nitrates concern many cancer researchers. Nitrates are thought to be carcinogenic substances found in certain deli meats, bacon, ham, and hot dogs. Many researchers believe that a diet high in nitrates increases the risk of developing cancer. However, certain foods that are believed to lower the risk of stomach cancer include vegetables and fruits. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots are very helpful in the prevention of stomach cancer. Tobacco, alcohol, obesity, and a family history are also factors that increase the risk of developing stomach cancer.
Because of the difficulty to diagnose stomach cancer, a large cancerous tumor may already be present by the time symptoms appear. Common symptoms of stomach cancer include upper abdominal pain more noticeable after eating, weight loss, general weakness, and bleeding. Another unusual symptom of stomach cancer is the experience of early fullness when eating. This is caused by the stomach’s inability to expand due to the presence of the tumor. These symptoms also resemble other ailments making the diagnosis even more difficult.
Prevention and early detection of any cancer is the most beneficial treatment available. Cancer that is left untreated only causes the cancer cells to spread quickly to other parts of the body. Stomach cancer occurs more often in men from the ages of 40 to 80. If you or someone you know has been experiencing the above symptoms, please consult your medical provider.
