Vitamin C is an essential water soluble vitamin. Find out how this vitamin benefits the body.

“Vitamine” is the root that means vital amine. This forms the word vitamin. Vitamins are essential to human health and are required to perform specific cellular functions. There are nine water soluble vitamins and four fat soluble vitamins.

Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, a common water soluble vitamin. It is commonly found in fruits and vegetables. This vitamin is in a class called anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are known for their benefit of longevity, and anti-aging. Vitamin C functions for the maintenance of normal connective tissues (collagen) and wound healing. Also, vitamin C facilitates the absorption of dietary iron from the intestine. A deficiency in vitamin C results in scurvy. Scurvy is a disease characterized by sore, spongy gums, loose teeth, fragile blood vessels, swollen joints, and anemia.
