Dried basil leaves and flowers used as potpourri enhance the atmosphere with a fragrant, spicy scent. You may use basil as an insect repellant. You can do this by keeping a potted basil plant on the windowsill or burning sprigs of basil to deter insects. The essential oil, basil, can increase mental alertness, increase one’s concentration, relieve headaches and migraines, and relieve the symptoms of depression. Basil can help to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce the pain of menstrual cramps. You may blend this herb with clary sage, geranium, rosemary, lavender, bergamot, and the citrus oils.
Basil essential oil can be mixed with massage oil and gently rubbed over the stomach to ease digestive problems of many types. However, basil should be used carefully on the skin as it can cause irritation. Try mixing a few drops with a carrier oil, skin cream, or lotion to add to your bath. Basil should not be used during pregnancy. Essential oils should be treated with respect since they hold many healing properties when used correctly. However, when essential oils are used improperly similarly to medications many undesired effects can occur.
