Vitamins and Your Health: Cholesterol

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Most associate cholesterol with heart disease. However, our body could not function properly without cholesterol, vitamins and your health.

Many of us know of cholesterol as a bad thing. Most associate cholesterol with plaque formation and narrowing of blood vessels (atherosclerosis). However, cholesterol performs many essential functions in our bodies along with vitamins to help maintain your health.

Cholesterol is a precursor of many specialized tissues such as bile acids, steroid hormones (estrogen and testosterone for example), and vitamin D. Cholesterol is also a structural component of all cell membranes. Cholesterol helps the cells to modulate their fluidity. Little do most know that cholesterol is not only brought into our bodies by our dietary intake, but also produced by our livers. So it is now more evident, that we cannot live without cholesterol or vitamins in our healthy diets.
