Vitamins and Your Health: Fiber Controversy

Posted February 21st, 2006 by admin

High fiber foods containing vitamins and phytochemicals may be a synergistic health benefit.

Many studies have shown eating a high fiber diet can reduce the risk of colon cancer. Now researchers are realizing vitamins and minerals in high fiber foods may be benefiting your health along with the fiber content.

In past studies Europeans have shown a 40% lower risk of colon cancer by simply adopting a high fiber diet. Swedish women who added at least four and a half servings of whole grains to their diet had a 33% lower risk of developing colon cancer.

Now researchers are looking into all the facts this study has presented. Are the individuals involved in the study only adding fiber to their diets? Some high fiber foods that many suggest are fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables fortunately contain many health benefiting vitamins and minerals along with fiber content.

Taking all these factors into consideration, researches can not conclusively say fiber alone reduces the risk of colon cancer. Adding high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables to your diet has proven to reduce your risk of colon cancer. Vitamins and minerals stowed away in your high fiber foods hold the synergistic key phytochemicals and antioxidants waiting to benefit your health.
