Vitamins and Your Health: Homocysteine

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Learn more about today’s vitamins and your health topic; how homocysteine affects your health.

Many do not realize how vital the B vitamins are to their health. The B vitamins are beneficial in decreasing the protein called homocysteine. This protein has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, depression, certain cancers, and Alzheimer’s disease. Increased levels of the protein homocysteine in the blood can raise the risk of heart disease.

Homocysteine is a protein produced from the amino acid methionine, which is found in normal dietary protein. Homocysteine alone is not bad. But when our intake of B vitamins is not adequate, the body cannot convert homocysteine into glutathione and SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine). This causes the body’s levels of homocysteine to rise to a dangerous state.

However, research has shown that 1 in 10 people have an inherited genetic susceptibility to high homocysteine levels. The B vitamins help to protect the heart. Taking a good liquid vitamin supplement can protect the heart and reduce the levels of homocysteine in the blood.
