Vitamins and Your Health: Indole 3 Carbinol?

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Indole 3 carbinol is a plant compound renowned for its antioxidant benefits. Find out more about indole 3 carbinol, vitamins and your health.

Indole 3 Carbinol (I3C) offers many health benefits. I am sure most do not know what vitamin this is. Well, it is not really a vitamin (essential) but a plant compound. This compound offers anti-oxidant benefits, anti-cancer activity, and anti-estrogen therapy. You can find I3C in brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, bok choy, kale and cauliflower. I know what you are thinking. The vegetables you love the most, right?

The ingestion of this vitamin alters the metabolism of estrogen, especially in women. However, both men and women produce this hormone. Men produce very little of this hormone. This hormone is responsible for the primary sexual characteristics of women, such as breasts. I3C helps to fight cancer in women because they block estrogen receptors. Estrogen has been linked to breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers. In menopausal women, hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) is initiated to lessen the symptoms of menopause. However, this can pose a health risk for those women. Indole 3 Carbinol is a good substitute for the traditional HRT.
