Vitamins and Your Health: Pantothenic Acid

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Learn why vitamin B5 is essential to your health.

Pantothenic acid is commonly known as vitamin B5. This is an essential vitamin to good health. This vitamin has many functions in our body. Pantothenic acid is involved in energy production, fat metabolism, maintains healthy skin and hair, assists in steroid hormone production, and is essential for the nervous system.

Some signs of deficiency include muscle tremors, apathy, poor concentration, burning feet or tender heels, nausea or vomiting, lack of energy, exhaustion after light exercise, and anxiety or tension. Good food sources for this vitamin are mushrooms, broccoli, alfalfa sprouts, peas, lentils, tomatoes, celery, strawberries, eggs, squash, whole wheat, and avocados. However, pantothenic acid is destroyed by heat and food processing. Stress, alcohol, tea, and coffee can rob the body of this vitamin and seriously affect your health.
