Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Potassium is an essential mineral. Find out how vitamins and minerals can benefits your health.

Today we will write about the importance of the mineral potassium. This mineral is essential for the body. Potassium enables nutrients to move into and waste products to move out of cells via the sodium-potassium pump. Potassium also promotes healthy nerves and muscles. Potassium maintains fluid balance in the body, and helps to secrete insulin for blood sugar control and constant energy production. Potassium is involved in metabolism, maintains heart function, and stimulates intestinal digestion and movement for proper elimination.

Some good sources of potassium are pumpkin, molasses, mushrooms, cauliflower, celery, radishes, and cabbage. Some signs of deficiency include rapid irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. However, it is usually not necessary to supplement potassium because of the availability in foods. But potassium can be depleted by excess sodium, alcohol, sugar, diuretics, laxatives, corticosteroid drugs, and stress.
