Vitamins and Your Health: Raw Asparagus Juice

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Learn what vitamins and health benefits the vegetable asparagus offers.

Asparagus is a tasty vegetable that offers great health benefits. However, I am sure most children do not like to eat it since it looks like a small tree. Asparagus is a very healthy vegetable that still grows wild in the Mediterranean countries.

Asparagus can also be juiced to offer healthy benefits. Asparagus has been termed “sparrowgrass” by herbalists. A helping of asparagus has less than forty calories and is rich in vitamin C, E, and folic acid.

Alkaloid asparagines are the therapeutically active substance found in asparagus. This substance exerts a rapid effect upon the kidneys, stimulating them and coloring the urine a dark yellow color within hours of consumption. This will also create a strong smell to one’s urine. This is created by the essential oils of asparagus. The essential oils lend asparagus its distinctive and pleasant flavor. These oils are very powerful but found in minute amounts. When asparagus is cooked, the quantity of the asparagines is reduced. A small amount of this raw juice produces a diuretic effect.
