Vitamins and Your Health Reveal Vitamin D Myths

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

When vitamins and your health join forces, you will find your body doesn’t need to ingest all essential vitamins. In fact, your body can metabolize vitamin D during health sun exposure?

Difficulty combining vitamins and your health usually begins during long work week. We simply do not have time to incorporate proper nutrition in or day. Often many sit cooped up in an office away from the fresh air deprived of valuable sunlight. Just 10 to 15 minutes of sunlight twice a week to the face, arms and back is not possible. Everyone wants a golden brown tan anyway so maybe there is an alternative?

Can a trip to the tanning salon be the difference to make sure our body metabolizes the proper quantity of vitamin D? Unfortunately, tanning salon rays are calibrated differently to prevent the benefits of vitamin D metabolism.

There are two types of ultraviolet rays; UVA and UVB. UVA and UVB are rays we are exposed to in the sun. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and only penetrate the top layers of our skin. UVB rays are responsible for helping our bodies metabolize vitamin D. UVA rays have longer wavelengths and penetrate deep through the skins layers. UVA rays are responsible for deep bronze tanning that so many of us desire. Unfortunately, UVA rays do not help our bodies metabolize vitamin D. Tanning salons calibrate the tanning equipment to produce 95% UVA to give there customers a deep golden brown tan.

If you are on a quest to combine vitamins and your health in a busy lifestyle, using a tanning salon to kill two birds with one stone is unfortunately not beneficial. Supplement your body with vitamin D by adding more vitamin fortified foods or possibly a vitamin supplement.
