Vitamins and Your Health: Zinc

Posted February 14th, 2006 by admin

Zinc is an essential member on the vitamin and mineral list that benefits your health.

Zinc is an essential mineral, not a vitamin. However, I know most have heard of this mineral. In fact, they make zinc lozenges for the common cold. Why is zinc so essential to your health?

Zinc is a major component of our DNA and RNA (genetic material), and most of our enzymes. Zinc helps to control the hormones of the sex organs. Zinc also helps to combat stress. Zinc is very essential for the growth of a healthy fetus.

Some signs of deficiency in this mineral are stretch marks, acne or greasy skin, loss of appetite, pale skin, and depression. It is difficult to become toxic with this mineral since the dose would have to be greater than 2,000 mg, and most supplemental dosages are between 5-20 mg. Some food sources include oysters, shrimp, whole wheat, oats, green peas, egg yolks and many vitamin supplements.
