Today’s weight loss tips topic is fad diets. Diets that describe themselves as New or Revolutionary are diets that are 20-30 years old. These diets have been revived by society’s constant trend to be thin. A few examples of fad diets include the Zone diet, the Zen diet, and the Atkins diet.

Fad diets usually claim outrageous ideas or principals that go against the common sense of a diet. Some common claims of fad diets include eating whatever you want, eating no protein and all carbohydrates, eating no fat, eating high protein and high fat with little to no carbohydrates, or eating a diet exclusively of one type of food such as grapefruit. One of the most popular fad diets is the low carb, high protein diet. These fad diets claim that carbohydrates are “bad”, many individuals are “insulin resistant” or “allergic” to carbohydrates and gain weight when eating them. The low carb, high protein diets encompass the South Beach diet, Atkins diet, and the Zone diet.

The low carb, high protein diets accelerate weight loss through the induction of ketosis. Ketosis is not necessarily bad but an alternative fuel source in times of prolonged fasting. However, prolonged ketosis can put undo stress on the kidneys and liver. Excessive ketone bodies produced during ketosis increase acidity of the blood and urine. This can cause depletion of calcium from the body. Ketosis can cause constipation, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue until the body adjusts to the change in primary fuel sources. Diets that are high protein can be high in saturated fat which has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
