Wellness Tip: Dealing with Stress

Posted November 30th, 2005 by admin

Exercise for some can lead to more stress. Find out why.

Exercise is crucial for our health. However, if you have a depressive illness exercising less than 20 minutes vigorously can actually be stressful. Why is this?

Most people attribute exercise to stress relief. But if you suffer from depression, exercise can only allow you to focus on your depressive state. If you are exercising to boost a depressed mind, it is good to do something that requires a lot of concentration. Not an exercise that is mindless.

Also, we secrete endorphins when we exercise vigorously for 20 minutes or greater. These endorphins are similar in the effect of pain medications such as morphine. So the endorphins that are released supply our body with a pain free stimulation. Well, until the next day when the lactic acid sets in.
