Alcoholism is a serious alcohol disorder that can affect anyone. Alcoholism is dependency or abuse of the legal drug alcohol. There are signs that can help you recognize alcoholism.
Over time the alcoholic develops a tolerance to alcohol. This means that the alcoholic requires increasing amounts of alcohol to become intoxicated. Symptoms of withdrawal will occur when the alcoholic attempts to reduce or discontinue alcohol intake.
Abusers of alcohol drink heavily according to various times. They may have problems with violent episodes, missing work or school, and drinking and driving. It is estimated that 14 million adults in the U.S. either abuse alcohol or are alcoholics.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism define heavy drinking or alcoholism as:
*healthy men under the age of 65 that drink more than four drinks daily and less than fourteen drinks a weekly
*healthy women under the age of 65 or men over the age of 65 that consume three drinks daily and less than twelve drinks weekly
