Using essential oils and aromatherapy is one of the many effective wellness tips available. There are several ways to utilize essential oils and aromatherapy making this tip a very useful one.

You may use an inhalation method with your child through a diffuser, nebulizer, or adding the essential oil to a humidifier reservoir. You may also use essential oils topically if diluted properly in a carrier oil before applying. You may also add the essential oil to a bath which combines both inhalation and topical application methods.

Each essential oil is diluted to varying strengths depending on your child’s age and the use of the essential oil. Essential oil concentration may range from one drop per tablespoon carrier oil to a couple drops per teaspoon of carrier oil added to a bath. There is a huge variation in dilution levels depending on the circumstances. This is why it is imperative that you know exactly with what you are dealing with.

If your child has sensitive skin, test a small patch of skin first. Do not apply essential oils to the eyes. Do not use citrus oils such as orange, lemon, tangerine, mandarin, lime, and bergamot if your child will be exposed to sunlight (avoid sunlight for 12 hours). These essential oils are phototoxic and can react with the suns rays. However, they may be used in a bath where they will be washed off the skin. Do not ingest essential oils. Carrier oils that are safe for use with children and babies is sweet almond, apricot kernel oil (for children over 6), jojoba (added at a 10% concentration).

Here are some good wellness tips to help nurture your child through touch. Studies show that using massage recipes can help with growth both physically and emotionally in children. In fact, premature babies have shown through studies that touch is an essential aspect of a child’s ability to thrive. However, the massage should always be done in the direction of the blood flow such as from wrist to shoulder.

  • Restful Sleep – 4 drops lavender, 2 drops Roman Chamomile
  • Happy Child – 3 drops Rose, 1 drop Neroli
  • Calm and Relaxed – 3 drops Petitgrain, 3 drops Neroli
  • Emotional Nurturing – 1 drop Rose, 1 drop Vanilla, 2 drops Lavender
  • Added to 1 ounce of sweet almond oil as a carrier oil
