Wellness Tips: Cancer Screening

Posted January 28th, 2006 by admin

Learn more about today’s wellness tip; the importance of cancer screening.

One of the greatest tools in fighting cancer is early detection. The earlier the cancer is detected the better the prognosis. Cancer is classified by stages. The stages represent where the cancer has spread. If cancer has not spread yet, this is classified as stage I. Stage I cancer yields a very good prognosis. However, cancer does not always begin with symptoms. In fact, patients visit the doctor after symptoms are quite noticeable. Once symptoms begin, the likelihood of cancer metastasis is greater. Cancer can be detected early through cancer screenings.

Surgery and radiation treatments are for a specific region of the body. These treatments do not treat cancer that has spread to nearby regions or sites. There exist medications that are relatively new that treat tumor growth from spreading and invading nearby tissues. However, if the tumor has already spread these drugs will be of no assistance.

Finally, if the cancer has metastasized then chemotherapy offers the best hope for this type of cancer. However, chemotherapy can be administered at an early stage of cancer for a good prognosis versus at a later stage which is more palliative. Research efforts have increased not only into new treatments for cancer but prevention and early detection of cancer.
