Wellness Tips: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Learn more about today’s wellness tip; understanding carpal tunnel syndrome.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome? The name comes from the carpal bones that line the carpal tunnel on the posterior (back) surface of the wrist. The transverse carpal ligament is positioned on the anterior (front) surface of the wrist. The carpal tunnel is about the size of an index finger in diameter. The flexor tendons, arteries, and nerves glide past one another with ease in a carpal tunnel that has not decreased in diameter.
When the finger and wrist muscles are overused in repetitive movements, a muscle imbalance will develop. This causes the carpal bones to shift. The carpal tunnel becomes smaller and impinges the structures within. This results in painful and debilitating symptoms. Common symptoms of carpal tunnel include tingling, numbness, loss of coordination, loss of strength, and paresthesia. Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms can be eliminated by performing a stretch and exercise program that addresses the muscle imbalance, in most cases.
