Today’s wellness tips topic; what causes SIDS? SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a disease in which a baby between the ages of 1 month and 6 months mysteriously dies while sleeping. This is one of the most horrifying things that can happen to a family. SIDS is commonly called ‘Crib Death’. There are a few causes for SIDS including suffocating bedding, a smoking parent, and a parent that rolls over their infant.

There is another reason that is responsible for a significant number of unexplained crib deaths. After World War II, crib mattresses had to be made fire retardant. Strange consequences resulted from adding the fire retarding chemicals to the crib mattresses. Common household bacteria and fungi such as scopulariopsis brevicaulis particularly like the fire retarding material in the crib mattresses. These bacteria and fungi after ingesting the material emanate a gaseous derivative of the fire retarding chemical. These gases become very lethal to an infant. These gases are comparable to many well known nerve gases. Body heat, urine, saliva, and vomit help to trigger the fungus to act.

This is why babies are to lay on their backs when sleeping. Another remedy for this problem is wrapping the mattress with a polyethylene sheet. The top and sides should be covered with the sheet fixed and folded underneath the mattress with sticky tape. You can also buy readymade polyethylene slip on mattress covers that are inexpensive. Wellness tips encourages you to protect both your family and yourself by being a well informed consumer.
